Xubuntu 12.10 logon screen missing username

Rebooted Xubuntu 12.10 box (I think after an update that included kernel updates) and got the logon screen with an odd twist: my username doesn't show, just two entries labeled "Comment". If I enter my password to login I get a screen asking if I want the default profile or create a new - the default profile choice takes me back to logon screen and no entry with my username.

I logon via virtual console (e.g., Control+Alt+F5) and that takes my username and password. Does this mean that my profile is screwed up? Pretty odd having the "Comment" entries showing and not my username.

Any thoughts and suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

No. When you get the login screen, that is one of three programs. GDM, KDM, or XDM. Since this is a buntu; my guess is its GDM. I don't run any falvour of ubuntu anymore, so I'm not sure. If its GDM, then this link will help.

-->http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1731264 that leads to this doc file

If that does not work, google something like 'how to add users to gdm login' just change to kdm or xdm.
