xserver crashed after a weekend without touching the computer

Hi,

I have installed on friday a new distro on my computer, ubuntu 10.04 lts on my 1GB ram and 3Ghz computer. It has dual booting system. Everything worked fine, i have even been using the xwindows and althought i must say that it felt a bit slow in time reaction to my typing still good enough. I left the computer running with no programs, just idle and now my computers screen is dead. I can not see anything.

I restarted the computer and in normal mode it goes black.

I started in recovery mode and i manage to get to a console where I type startx and i see the next error

Quote:
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
if the server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.XO-lock and start again
So i did, i removed the file and typed startx again, this time:

Quote:
XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running

Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running
So I shutdown the computer and restarted. This time (still in recovery mode) i typed startx and no difference, now i can not even find /tmp/.XO-lock.

I tried to reconfigure the Xserver by sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-sorg and nothing. I have read by googleing that restarting /etc/init.d/kdm or /etc/init.d/gdm might be recovered. Well i do not have these on my computer.

So I had a fresh install, i worked with the xserver (so i do not think is a driver problem) fine until i left the computer without running anything and the xserver crashed. Any ideas?

Thanks

Digging in a bit more.

In recovery mode i logged in as a normal user rather than root. I restarted the Xserver by startx and after waiting for a while i am sent to a commnad line with the next errors:

Quote:
No protocol specified
...
giving up.
xinit: Resource temporarily unavailable (errno 11): unable to connect to X server

waiting for X server to shud down ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log

xinit: Server error
xauth: error in locking authority file /home/myname/.Xauthority
Any ideas?

Thanks

What graphics card do you have?
If it is ati or nvidia, did you install the proper graphics drivers?
If you have intel graphics, or if you have ati or nvidia and you have not installed the proper drivers, then you can try turning off kernel mode setting as discussed here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting
For now, try booting with any of these options:
nomodeset
modeset=0
modeset=1

Hi,

sorry for late reply, i did not have access to my pc.

First, I reinstalled the OS from scracht. Again the terminal worked fine while installing. The key, i believe, comes from the updates of synaptic manager.

What i did, and i got that from googleing, is to remove the nvdia drivers from synaptic. What happens is that i have intel graphic card and the system is using nvidia drivers. Followed link below.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=807369

Thanks for the help

Well, why did you install the nvidia driver if you have intel graphics?
The proprietary nvidia drivers are not installed by default.
