X Server Fatal error

Hi,
i am using ubuntu 7.0.4 on a tohsiba laptop. Uptill this morning everything was working fine. i shutdown my system and now when i restart it, i get this error

Its a blue screen (reminds me of a blue scrreen from windows...lol)

"Failed to start X server. it is likely no setup correctly....and so on".

and when i select "yes" option to view the details it says

(WW) No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:2:1) found
(EE) Screens found, but none have a usuable configuration.
Fatal server error :
no screens found "

Any ideas on what to do about this????

and i am not sure if it is related, but the last package that i had installed was kde-guidance. Could it have caused someproblem????

Thank you for your time.

Looks like you have some erroneous or otherwise messed up stuff in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
I have no idea what KDE-Guidance is, or if it had/has any bearing on X configuration, but the errors you posted above definitely indicate a misconfiguration of your xorg.conf file, particularly involving a device section or Screen section referencing a device located (or not located) at PCI-Bus 0:2:1. Start looking there; if there's a backup of the file, compare it to the in-use file, and if it is significantly different, rename the xorg.conf to something else, and put the BACKUP (xorg.conf~) in its place and restart X or reboot. See what happens.

Hi,

I'm also running 7.04 on a toshiba laptop and ran into the same problem when I did a software update this morning. I couldn't fix it and ended up having to reinstall Ubuntu. I've now updated everything except the xorg files and it's okay.

I dunno about the reinstall, but after looking through zillion posts, as a disparate measure i opened up

sudo kedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and found this line.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

It runs the X config program and after setting my driver to vessa, things are okay. but the problem is that with vessa, the DVD playback is horrible. i tried using i810 driver but then all the fonts go blurrry....
Strange... i never had such probs with mandriva... ne ways lets c if i can get things to work finally.

Yeah i found that line too and tried it, but the re-config failed and I didn't know what else to do. Maybe this is just a bug with toshiba's or something. What model laptop and video card do you have? I've got a Satellite a100 with an ATI x1600. Have you had any luck getting the Fn keys, media buttons, or fan control to work?

Cheers.

i am using toshiba satellite series M70 (2 Ghz centrino) and the vga card with this one is intel 915 .

About the function keys, try Fn+ F6 for reducing the brightness and Fn +f7 for increasing it. It works without any special setup.

Other than this, try installing KLaptopMonitor and enable ACPI. You can access it from KControl Center --> Power.

or you could use power manager that comes with ubuntu...

....

edit..
sorry i just checked.. they allow you to control CPU but not the fan..

but hope this helps.

Okkay .. i managed to fix my problem..... After reading some other pages, i found that for my chipset it need to install "915resolution", i installed that and then used kde-guidance to select the 1200 X800 resolution and now it is perfect....

finally...

try and c if you can find something semilar for your model.
