what is a cheap but functional PCI 802.11G that will work on feisty and gutsy gibson ? preferably something of decent/good/acceptable quality, cheap, and found on the usual pricewatch.com and pricegrabber.com channels at a low price.

What is "cheap" and/or "a low price"?

Is this for a desktop computer or a laptop (which has mini PCI and PCMCIA options of course)?

Well, everything I've read says the DLink 520G with the Atheros chipset (you can read the back of the box to see this) work great with Linux, however you mileage may vary of course. I suggest buying it in person at a computer store so you can check the box of course.

I can't say it will absolutely work though. The manufacturers are fickle and 2 cards can come out with the same name but different chipsets. Just be diligent and make sure it has the correct one. Good luck.
