Volume control doesn't work

Hi everyone
I m using Ubuntu Ultimate Edition. Recently the pcm volume control cannot lower the system volume.It is always maximized, only in VLC I can lower the volume.
Help would be greatly appreciated with this.Thank U

Have you tried running alsamixer from the terminal to try to change the volume?
I assume Ubuntu Ultimate also uses pulse audio like regular Ubuntu. Have you tried going to the sound preferences and changing the default sound settings from pulse audio to alsa?

Tried to change the sound to alsa but on testing shows the followin error message:
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=music: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument
and the application hangs.....
also opened alsamixer in terminal but for no good...........plz help.

What happens exactly when you use alsamixer?

So the sound works, but you just can not turn the volume down? This sounds unusual. I don't think I have heard of this before. If the sound works you should be able to control the volume with alsamixer.

when I start the alsamixer it shows the master volume.But my volume is controlled by pcm and not by the master volume control.The problem with the GUI control is that at times it can turn down the vol and at times it just can't.

Open the volume control GUI. Click on the prefernces button. See if you can add PCM (and whatever else you want) to the volume control GUI. Then see if you can better cotrol the volume.

I am using Ubuntu 9.04, not Ubuntu Ultimate. In 9.04 you can add things to the volume control. I don't know if this is the case with Ubuntu ultimate.
