Upgrading ubuntu 7.04 - 7.10

Will programs I installed in 7.04 as well as my documents be safe or do I need to back them up?

Is /home on a separate partition? If so, then they should be safe, but its important to always keep a backup.

Yes and yes. I just upgraded 7.04 to 7.10 yesterday and it went without a hitch. Settings, documents, and non-repository installs were left intact. And /home is on a separate partition.

It shouldn't matter if your /home is on a separate partition (though it's a good idea), the upgrade doesn't install a fresh system but updates the packages you have installed and installs some new recommended packages.

I upgraded 7.04 to 7.10 a week ago and I did not have /home on a separate partition and everything was perfectly brought forward. I couldn't be happier with Gutys 7.10.

I upgraded to 7.10 and have lost my VMWare server, VM's and all associated files.
Everything else is OK but I need a way to resurrect my VMWare without going through a full reinstall.
Anyone got any ideas ??
