Upgrading kernel for Core Duo

I'm new to Ubuntu. I'm running it on a laptop with an Intel Core Duo CPU. I understand that after I install Ubuntu I need to run 'sudo apt-get install linux-686-smp' and that will install a smp kernel to take advantage of both CPU cores.

After I upgrade to the smp kernel do I need to uninstall the default 386 kernel? Or will Ubuntu simply ignore that kernel, or uninstall it itself?

After installing the new kernel you should now have a choice in the bootloader menu. You don't need to uninstall the original kernel, just make sure the SMP one is selected when you boot

The default linux kernel has SMP already, (run "uname -v" in a terminal).
You can install the linux-image-686 package if you want better optimization for you processor but both will use SMP.
when you install more than 1 kernel grub (the boot loader) will be updated and will come up with a menu at boot asking what kernel version you want to boot, so you don't need to uninstall if you don't want to.
