updating linux kernel

Hi ppl, i've recently got an old version of Ubuntu and want to update to the latest 7.04 version. In RedHat based versions like CentOS you can easily type the comand: yum update to update the kernel automatically without having to download anything. Is there a similar command for this purpose in Ubuntu (Debian based sys) or a way of updating my current version? Also is there a command to check the version linux one is currently running?
many thanks in advance

uname -r will display your current running kernel. You can update the kernel using the package manager.

You want to update Ubuntu itself to 7.04 (Feisty) or you want to update the kernel ???.

You can't use the package manager to (safely) jump to 7.04 if you are at a level below 6.10 - well you couldn't last time I looked at the doco. As for the kernel, they have a cutoff point for each release, so you can't do that either unless you compile it yourself.
