unreal goty slow on feisty fawn

I installed Unreal tournament goty edition on feisty fawn and it runs really slow and chunky. I have 3d acceleration enabled. I ran

glxinfo
and got:
direct rendering: Yes

I can run Cube fine and fast.

My hardware is:

CPU0: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+
nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 MX 440] (rev a3)

I think my hardware should be more than capable.
How can I troubleshoot/tweak this?
