Unable to install ubuntu

Trying to install ubuntu 6.06 on my Toshiba Satellite M35X-S149.
The process starts in "slow motion". Thirty minutes before the first step (setting language)appears. After two hours, system freezes while still on language screen.
I have tried this on two computers with the same results. I have tried two different ubuntu disks.
Other instillations of applications (not OS) install in normal time.
I've tried everything this eighty-four year old newbie knows to do. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to LQ.

Are you using the Ubuntu live cd or alternate installation disc? If you are using the live cd, try installing from the alternate cd.
