Ubuntu software is not working (ubuntu 20.04.3)

Greetings folks.

Ubuntu software won't open. It spins for several seconds and then just goes away. I really don't want to reinstall and lose all of my tweaks.

Thanks in advance,

Open a terminal window and launch gnome-software from there. What error messages are you getting?

Or since you would have the Terminal open sudo apt update if it tells you updates are available sudo apt upgrade to install them.

It said gnome-software was not installed, I installed it and it works. Ubuntu software still doesn't.

From the application log.
Code:
Gtk:ERROR:../gtk/gtkiconhelper.c:494:ensure_surface_for_gicon: assertion failed (error == NULL): Failed to load /snap/snap-store/547/data-dir/icons/Yaru/16x16/status/image-missing.png: Unable to load image-loading module: /snap/snap-store/557/gnome-platform/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-png.so: /snap/snap-store/557/gnome-platform/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-png.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory (gdk-pixbuf-error-quark, 5)

Lovely it fails on finding a stupid icon and related files in that damn snap, no clue on that junk.

Edit: Though possibly one clue on it, re-install snap and see if it fixes its mess.

Edit2: And now it pops into my head if that does not work then install the apt-file program and use it to find the package containing the files it says are missing in that error. An example of a search using it.

Code:
root@bullseye-raspi:~# apt-file search linux-image-5.10.0-8-arm64/control
linux-image-5.10.0-8-arm64: /usr/share/bug/linux-image-5.10.0-8-arm64/control

Bag it, I'm going to reinstall it. I have a separate home partition so most of my tweaks will be preserved. Marking as solved.

Thanks for trying.

I was of impression that Ubuntu Software Center is just a link to GNOME Software on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

Try installing all of the packages apt-config-icons*
Code:
sudo apt install apt-config-icons\*

Well nuts, the icons it can't find are supposed to be in my home directory so a reinstall didn't fix it. My backup routine is
Code:
rsync -avr --delete /home/glenn /media/glenn/Backup
so whatever is missing got deleted from the backup as I ran a backup after ubuntu software quit working.

[edit] Time to rethink my backup strategy [/edit]

Code:
sudo apt install apt-config-icons\*
didn't fix it.

Thanks,
--glenn
