You need a bootable image, and you need to burn it as an image.
Copying individual files doesn't do it.

Go look for a .iso, and burn that as an image.

If it's not an iso than you cant't boot from it. Surely they must have some bootable isos on their w/site?

You may find that the file you have is an iso ready to burn to a disk. WinRAR will recognize .iso's and it can unpack them to be viewed and changed.

I will assume that you are doing this from windows XP. Go to the 'control panel', then 'folder options', then the 'view' tab, now look for an entry that says 'Hide extensions for known file types' take the tick out of the box next to it and then click 'OK'. This will now let you see the files extensions in explorer. If you look at the file for ubuntu look to see what extension it has, if it is 'iso' burn this as an image to a disk with your favorite piece of software. But don't use windows built in burning stuff as it can not burn iso images to a disk.

If you are using XP, download ISORecorder, it's free and easy to use. I've used it to burn many live and/or distro CD-ROMs with no trouble.

MY BAD wrong slot, thanks for fixing that

ok i went that direction as you said snowtigger ,and then it hit me ,i went into WINRAR and in the file association tab i unchecked ISO. now it burns but only to 96% and my puter gets frosty.
tried 4 different pieces of software and she locks down at 96% every time.i can rip and burn a 4 gig disk no problem ,so it must be the ISO. you think

It may sound daft, but is the disk you are burning to big enough.

To see if it is the iso find the md5sum for it (it should be in the same place as you got the iso) and check to see if the image is correct.

i would hope so.
4.7 gig dvd+r

i got to thinking how this personal confuser has some issues with hibernating and coming out of the screen saver,im thinking that it may have corrupted the file when i awakened her.
i have md5sum and ran it against the ISO it to locked up,in fact it dosent work on any other ISO in my system. it has to be the file.
im down loading it again of another server.

If you are having a problem burning an .ISO image to CD, you can obtain a Ubuntu CD from other sources. Ubuntu will mail you the bootable CD, or you can get one from cheapbytes.com, or maybe you could contact the Toronto Linux Users Group or even make a meeting. The users group might be a good source for general linux info if you are near Toronto.

Just use magiciso to burn iso file to cd.
