Ubuntu Desktop New Image and No Video

I have downloaded and installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my HP Elitebook 8440p Nvidia network card intergrated into the laptop. I have several of these laptops(5) and all of them have the same video issue where once the install has been done and the laptop is rebooted the screen goes black and some have dim backrounds and etc. Is this a known issue with this version of Ubuntu and Nvidia drivers?

What specific nvidia card is in your laptop?
Have you installed the proper nvidia drivers? See this for installing the nvidia drivers in Ubuntu:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Bi...erHowto/Nvidia
If you can not even manage to get to the desktop to install the nvidia driver from the hardware manager, then pass the nomodeset option to the Ubuntu kernel line in grub2 when you boot Ubuntu. Then install the nvidia driver and reboot.
Write back if you need more help

many thank for you your help. I was able to find the solution to the issue based on stuff you had given me. This is what I did to resolve the issue:

1 - On the boot from the Ubuntu Live CDROM(Ubuntu/Xubuntu), I chose f6 which is equivalent to the "E" on a normal install(Grub/Boot Loader) and simply added "nouveau.modset=0"(grub loader) or just chose that option from the Live CDROM during the initial install.

2 - Once the install is done, I simply went to the nvidia website and downloaded what I needed:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

3 - When I attempted to install the drivers from "init 1" it didnt like, of course I didn't read the error messages on the screen that simply gave me the correct directions, so I had to "init 5" or boot into GDM normally and stop GDM to be able to install the drivers. I kept wining about the "nouneau" modules being loaded and or in use:

PHP Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
4 - From the cli I was able to install the nvidia drivers without issues.

5 - After the install was done of the drivers, after a reboot I noticed there was a NVIDIA splash screen and I wasnt going to have that so I had to add this option in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to the device section:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml

PHP Code:
Section "Device"

Identifier "nVidia Inc. GeForce2"

Driver     "nvidia"

Option     "NoLogo" "true"

VideoRam   65536
EndSection

Nowadays on newer versions of Ubuntu, the correct way to stop X is to run:
Code:
sudo service gdm stop
Then just replace"stop" with "start" in order to restart gdm.

Glad you got this fixed!
