Ubuntu 6.1? Prepackaging all the Software Updates?

I'm about to give a training course on Linux, as part of which I will hand out lots of Ubuntu Dapper Drake 6.06 CD's.

The trouble is currently the update manager is pulling in nearly 200MB of updates.

Is there anyway (jigdo maybe?) of creating a fresh ISO with all the updates on board?

Or perhaps an additional CD with all the updates?

The problem is I expect several of my trainees will only have a slow dial up link.

Thanks!

You need to understand that Ubuntu only installs the base operating system and then installs the rest of the OS via the internet. A lot of debain bases distros work in this fashion. This allows for the new install to possess current packages even though you have to download updates after the install is complete.

It's just the nature of the operating system.

Yes, no. The point is of the 600Mb base OS on the CD, it is immediately updating 200Mb.

ie. This is not a case of "the rest is on the net as needed" it is a case of "a third of _this_ base CD is already out of date".

Yip. I know it happens.

It is Good that it happens.

Now I want to be kind to my trainees (and our bandwidth) and give them either an up-to-date CD or the updates prepackaged on a separate CD.

I'm not saying "Ubuntu is Bad because...", so please don't get defensive. I'm saying whoops, this is a bit inconvenient, I'm sure if I knew a little bit more, and did a little bit of work, I can make the problem go away.

My question is purely looking for that "little bit more" knowledge so I can do that little bit more work.

I think that you could possibly download the *.deb files and their respective additional dependencies burn them to a CD. Then it would only be a matter of telling 'apt' (edit: or 'adept') to check the CD as a repository.

That is my newbie opinion of the problem. I may have overly simplified it, but that is the limit of my understanding on these matters. Hope this gives you an idea or two.

Good luck to you bringing more people to the knowledge that Linux is superior.

I think lein has the best idea, your alternative would be to re-master the CD.

Bear in mind that a complete Debian set runs about 14 CD's or perhaps 2 DVD's. Still, you should be able to get plenty of updates & supplements on 1 or possibly 2 CD's.

BTW, What are you using for a text?

BTW#2, Is this a face-to-face class?

BTW#3, May I suggest considering KDE rather than Gnome (i.e. Ku- not U- buntu) for GNU/Linux beginners?

yip, that's what I would like to do. The question is How?

Again, How? I can easily create a ISO of a directory, but getting the list of packages I need and creating the package lists for synaptic to chew on I don't know how.

My own, it's a html document with lots and lots of link and a disclaimer up front that it is totally unneeded. Linux is a child of the 'net and as such there are gigabytes of info on subject, just ask Google.

My aim is simple...

1) Give Windows users the mind altering experience of realizing how vastly bigger a thing Linux is compared to Windows.
2) Introduce them to the various views of Linux, as radical Movement (GNU), as a Kernel, as Distribution, as a File System Layout (LSB), as Philosophy, as an Attitude, as a Culture (bazaar / Noosphere), ...
3) Give them pointers where to start reading.(eg. Rute, LDP, LPG,...)
4) Make sure they understand the "Free Software" as "Free as in Freedom" software.

In the second session I go into hands on howto appropriate / tailored to the individuals in the class.

Hokay, suggestion noted. I'll make both available.
