Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS Software Updater connection problems

Background: HP EliteDesk 705 G1 SFF, Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS, Broadcom Limited NetXtreme BCM5762 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe (rev 10). This is not certified Ubuntu hardware, as I would need a 705 G3 or G4 computer for that.

What I was trying to do was simply update the system through the Software Updater immediately after a clean install: no other operating systems are installed on other partitions, nor is this an upgrade. It's strange in that the Software Updater will say "Failed to download repository information", but I'm obviously able to browse the web, as I'm posting this from the same computer.

If I turn off and then connect the wired connection, I'll regain internet access. Other times, the Software Updater will work a little bit before stopping. I know this because the "Details of updates" part of the Software Updater gets progressively smaller (185 MB now, instead of the first shot of like 350 MB).

I've skimmed a few posts about this, but nothing seems to fit. This seems to be the closest fit: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...x/+bug/1447664, but it didn't seem like there was a consistent resolution. Any suggestions? I'm also a beginner, so if I've not provided enough information I apologize.

Soon after logging in find Software Updater has started its updating, so provides Warning am unable to use terminal commands to update/upgrade, until Software Updater finishes.


Are you using update application or terminal commands ?


example: apt --help
example: sudo apt update

The first two commands worked just fine, as I expected they would. I couldn't connect to the internet either, and had to disable and reenable the wired connection after the last command. sudo apt upgrade led to this:

Nevermind. It turns out that Broadcom has been less than forthright about opening up their documentation to the open source community. I wound up getting a TP-Link NIC and everything worked first shot out of the gate.
