I'm using Ubuntu Edgy 6.10 and I know there's no real large differences other than Desktop Effects and the Window's Disk Read tool, or NTFS Config or whatever it's called, In Feisty Fawn. But, getting to the point, I'm using Linux on a 6 gig partition with slightly less than half used. Problem is, the upgrade download is 700mb, and I'm a stickler about saving as much space as possible. For fragmenting reasons, just to keep space in case of anything, and because I have OCD. And about software, I regard Beryl near holy on this system, and I'd hate if it or (anything else for that matter) did not function properly because of the new version.
PS: I read somewhere (slashdot I think) that a new version of the kernel was just released. 2.6.21 or something? Should/How would I update that if it I wanted to and is it necessary at all?
PSS: Beryl SVN with AIGLX (I have a 64mb integrated Intel graphics controller if that matters either)
Maybe I'm just programmed to think that upgrades cause problems. Damn Windows...
Muchos Gracias!

If everything is working well for you, then I don't see any reason to upgrade. Generally you do not need to upgrade to the latest and greatest kernel unless the new kernel fixes bugs on your current system or you need some feature or hardware support thats not in the kernel you are running.
Thank you for moving the thread. I dunno how I could have missed the Ubuntu specific forum. I've been outta it today...
My main reason for wanting to upgrade is I heard feisty is more streamlined ( ^, and one or two other places)... Which greatly appeals to me because of my hardware handicaps on this computer.
Is that rumor true?

I used to have Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy, but then upgraded directly to Feisty and found its worth to upgrade. Feisty runs faster than Breezy on my notebook and I have no problem so far. Just had a problem with Opera web browser but that solved by updating Opera browser it self.
I think you can try Live cd to check your hardware compatibility (as you are using Ubuntu already, I think it will be always compatible, but still a good step to check before upgrade).
So... I guess I could upgrade...Would increasing the size of my Linux partition require reformatting?
And I doubt I have anything installed that would act differently If I upgraded to 7.04, other than Beryl, but the install for 7.04 and 6.10 are almost exactly the same so I doubt there would be issues. 'Sides, a reinstall of Beryl would be easy. And if it didn't work I have Desktop Effects anyway
I'm still cautious though. Nothing's perfect... And I consider my success with my Linux endeavor guided by luck in the first place, and it's sure to run out sometime or another.
"Would increasing the size of my Linux partition require reformatting?" Is all I need and I think I'll upgrade.
