screen size in 4:3 when it should be 16:9

hi all,
i just installed ubuntu over vista on my grandads laptop because his greatgrandson screwed it but anyway it is a 16:9 display but it only displays 4:3 my xorg.conf is:
Code:
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously
# in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings
# here are ignored.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier	"Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier	"Default Screen"
	Monitor "Configured Monitor"
	Device "Configured Video Device"
	SubSection "Display"
		Virtual	2304 800
	EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
EndSection
is there any way to make it 4:3?

Go to: system > preferences > display. See if you can select the resolution you need.
If that does not work, you can try xrandr:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution
What video card do you have? If it is ATI or nvidia, go to system > administration > hardware_drivers, and try to enable the proprietary driver. Then reboot and see if you get a proper resolution.

If the display problem comes back you can try booting to recovery mode and choose the option: xfix fix video. Then reboot and see if the display is better.
