Screen Resolution Not Increasing

My ubuntu have 600X480 screen resolution. After some research i had installed nvidia graphics drivers using ENVY software showed some compayible graphics drivers for my old Gforce MX400 64mb graphic card. but after installing it got worsen. it was displaying something 400X resolution. so again i did some research and followed commands like reconfig xord.conf. and then rebooted the system.

but after rebooting it came back to 600X again and there was no graphics drivers. so again getting same error while opening Nvidia X server setting."You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. "

what should i do to make resolutions 1024X740?

What command did you run to "reconfig xorg.conf"? Did you run:
Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
If so, then your xorg.conf is likely using the "nv" driver. PLease post exactly what you did.

It is telling you you need to reconfigure the nvidia driver. Do this:
Hit ctrl + alt + F2. This will put you on a virtual terminal. Then login and run:
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo nvidia-xconfig
sudo reboot
And see if that gets you a better resolution. If not, open a terminal and run nvidia-settings. It should allow you to choose your optimum resolution.
If that does not work, try using xrandr as described in this tutorial:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...item=927&num=1
Also, it may help to see "problem 7" on this page about your video card:
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/common-pro...x-upgrade.html

Also... and perhaps most importantly...
The nvidia driver may not work with your video card on Ubuntu 8.10 with the newer xorg. See nVidia "legacy" video support on the Ubuntu 8.10 release notes:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/810
If the nvidia driver will not work for you, then you may need to use the 2D "nv" driver. Just edit your xorg.conf and in the device section change the driver from "nvidia" to "nv". Or boot to recovery mode and run:
Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
then "sudo reboot".

Ok. this is what happened. i will go step by step.

ifirstly i installed the 177 packages suggested by ubuntugeek link. and rebooted. after showing ubuntu loading screen it gave me this error
"
Ubuntu is runnig in low graphics mode. The following error was encoutered. You may need to to update configuration to solve this.

(EE) Failed to load modile "type1"(module does not exist,0)
(EE) No Device detected
"

after pressing ok, it showed me another screen.

"
What would you like to do?
o Run Ubuntu in low-graphics mode for just this session
o Reconfigure graphics
o Troubleshoot error
"

whatever i select from above top two. it starts at same resolution.

then i tried this
Quote:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo nvidia-xconfig
sudo reboot
same thing happeneed. same error as given above.

and now at third solution, i manually changed the devide driver name from "Nvidia" to "nv". and then rebooted. but now something else happened. my monitor went off. i tried off/on monitor several times but it was going off n off again. so pressed ctr+alt+f2 and type nvidia-xconfig and then rebooted. it rebooted again with same original 600X resolution.

what should i do further?

If you are not dumb, you are lunatic for sure.
It was just a suggestion. If you don't like it, ignore it.
This is no place to show your eruditeness.

but when i activates it, it starts a downloader, and then nothing happens.. it stays as it is,,

but i still get this error when installing nvidia-glx-96

If you installed the nvidia driver from nvidia.com using envy, you will need to completely remove that before installing the nvidia driver from the Ubuntu repos. Also, there is something about nvidia-glx-71 in the output you posted. Did you also install that at some point?

From the output you posted it looks like you are running Ubuntu with the root account enabled. This is not recommended in Ubuntu. I'm not exactly sure what problems using the root account may cause though. So use it at your own risk:

Remove all nvidia drivers you had installed.
Then I would boo to recovery mode and run:
Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
This should hopefully get you a working desktop with the proper screen resolution using the 2D "nv" driver. Then once you get a working xorg.conf with the nv driver I would back that up with:
Code:
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak
I'm not sure if backing up xorg.conf will be of any use, since that file is mostly emplty these days in Ubuntu. It can't hurt though.
Then, once you got a good working desktop with the nv driver, then try again to reinstall the nvidia driver from the Ubuntu repos. Then hit ctrl + alt + F2 to get to a virtual terminal, then run:
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo nvidia-xconfig
sudo reboot
See if that gets you a working desktop with the nvidia driver.
