Question screen resolution


Hi all,

recently i encountered a problem , sometimes when the computer gets
booted and when we get login screen ,the screen resolution will be changed completely.I am not able to change the settings via graphically,then i have to reboot then i will be able to change settings graphically.

my questions are as follows

1)why is this happening??
2)how to change screen resolution settings via command line in ubuntu dapper???

That sometimes happens to me too. I have never bothered to check why. Logging out and in again fixes it for me. If that doesn't work, try to kill the x-server with ctrl-alt-backspace. It should automatically start back up.
