Screen and sounds cuts off on MSi netbook after xubuntu loads up.
Hi, i'm not entirely sure what's going on but I'll be try to be as descriptive as possible.
This morning I had just started up my netbook to read the news and listen to some music, when out of nowhere the screen and sound cut off. The machine is was still running but no screen or sound.
I couldn't do anything so i held the power button down and shut it off and started it again, it loaded up but the grub menu came up, (im stupid - whats the grub menu?) i just pressed enter, it started up fine but its screen and sound cut off after it had been running for 20-30 seconds.
Now its still doing it but loading straight up and skipping the grub menu.
I'm not sure what to do now as i'm new to this, and have only got xubuntu as a friend who is no longer here installed it for me and helped me with any problems.
Its a msi u135dx netbook.
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.
We're going to need some (plenty) more info if we're going to help. So ...
- did anything change last time you logged on successfully ?. Did you do a software update - do updates occur automatically ?.
- do you have the USB key that was used to install xubuntu.
- do you know how to use the terminal (Command level Interface - CLI) to enter commands. ?
- power on the netbook, and as soon as you see the hardware logo, hit the <Shift> key (and keep hitting it) to see the grub menu. Either write down everything or take a photo and load it up to dropbox or similar, and post here so we can see what you have as recovery option(s). We'll may need you to do some diagnostic commands.
If you don't know something (or what we're asking) say so - lack of knowledge isn't stupidity. Grub is the Linux software that loads the operating system after the hardware has booted (powered on). All operating systems require a bootloader, even Windows, but Micrsoft doesn't let you know about it much.

Tom
You do not mention what Xubuntu you installed, but if you have Xubuntu 12.04 just make an iso of Xubuntu 14.04 and install it and you will be happy, i know i did on an old P4 and it's running faster and better then xubuntu 12.04 and bug free so far.
