Returns to loginscreen

I have kubuntu 6.06 installed since some time. Today after a reboot, It's not possible anymore to login to KDE. I get the loginscreen, then a blackscreen and a mousepointer. Everything looks like it should, but I get bounced back to the loginscreen. It is the correct password, and I haven't installed anything new that I know of, just the usual updates (dont remember witch).

Any suggestions? I don't know really where to start.

it may be simple...you accidently selected a windowmanager that you do not have installed...so it tries fails and back to login.

2) so choose another wm to see if you can login ....if you can its not the config file

3) if you can not log into any wm...your config file either xf86free or xorg has got corrupted.

do you have a live cd or does your distro have a rescue mode?
