Question Remote Desktop that supports shared CD-ROM's

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to find a remote desktop program that supports sharing my CD drive with the host computer, like Windows remote desktop does.

I have tried Remmina that I found on some posts, and I like it over all; but it still doesn't do this one thing I require. At the moment I have to remote desktop to my windows 7 computer, and then remote desktop from there to my server when I need access to a cd drive.

Does anyone know of a linux or Ubuntu 11.10 compatible remote desktop type program that will support this over RDP?

Thanks,
Jeremy

Does it have to be over RDP? That seems like a pain to have to maintain an RDP connection every time you want to share the CD.

Why not access it over SSH/SFTP using Konqueror/Dolphin's fish:// protocol (Under Ubuntu/Gnome it would be Nautilus)?

Other alternatives could be sshfs or samba/nfs shares but they can be (slightly) more complicated to set up.

Sorry for the late reply, busy renovating a kitchen on my weekends

RDP connection is the only type that works at the moment. It's a work server I am connecting to to update drivers and I need the CD. But I do not maintain that particular server, and my company works under the "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" mentality. So as long as RDP works for them, they don't care to change it for me.

But in general, would that be the best way to do it? Set my CD drive as a shared drive and just access it across the network? And if that is the case, what type of connection I use to access the server should not be important if the drive is on the network right?

Thanks
JDGR

Slackware has rdesktop installed (although I've never used it, I usually use KRDC on the rare occasions I need an RDP client). It looks like you can share using:
Code:
rdesktop -r disk:<sharename>=<path> <server>
though. I'm not sure about Ubuntu, but I imagine it's easily installed.

Thanks for the info. I'll try it out and see if it is a better fix. At the moment, on my Ubuntu laptop I set the CD drive as a shared drive and I just map it on the remote computer whenever I require it. Probably won't be needing to do it again for quite some time.

I did check my ubuntu system and it does have rdesktop already installed. I think I've used it before, but didn't know about the switch to enable the disks. Thanks again for your help.
