I would like to have postgresql 8.3 and 8.4 installed at the same time - running of a different port of course. I would also like to have postgis 1.3 installed under 8.3.
I already have 8.4 and postgis installed, is it possible using the ubuntu provided packages to do this? If so where can I find them and how do I do this?
I know I can compile these as well, but I would rather use the dist packages for these two apps, has anyone don this setup before, or at the least two versions of postgis?
I would actually rather just do two postgis versions.
I have never really worked on Ubuntu, but I know that it has similar packaging system than Debian. So Debian's one being somehow similar to RHEL/Fedora rpm/yum one, I give the advice below.
Clearly using the packages it will install your softwares with many default paths for the files. I am not sure that you would be able to specified different paths for the dynamic Postgres libraries and executables. So I'll suggest you install one Postgres instance from the packages and the other from the sources performing the compilation with the options needed for the different paths as required by your needs to have both version running on the same machine.
As a DBA I would suggest installing 8.3 under one Ubuntu instance and 8.4 under another.
For many reasons (eg: ease of configuration, performance tuning, etc) it is best to have 1 database instance under 1 operating system instance. Of course you could still keep it all on 1 physical computer if you want.
Installing both 8.3 and 8.4 under 1 Ubuntu instance is just asking for headaches, in my experience.
Thanks for the advice all. I think I will end up running a Debian chroot within the Ubuntu install. Debian is a great OS, but always a little behind on what they consider stable. For what I need right now, that works to my advantage.
