Ok, trying to fix things the Linux way...

Hello All,

Ok, in an earlier post it was suggested that grow up and try to fix my ubuntu problem instead of just reintalling the os (windows style)-good idea. Here's my issue:

Friday, my system was running very slow... in the gnome environment all apps. including windows like firefox and even gnome terminal would take several seconds to come up. After that, I would try something like minimize the window and it would slowly minimize, complete with screen tracers as the window went down.

After I rebooted, the graphic ubuntu boot-up screen came up as usual showing progress and when it was done (no fail messages), I just got a black screen that sat there for hours- no gnome, not even the login screen came up. I've never run into this before and am not sure how to proceed. All help is much appreciated.

Cheers,

ab

Which version of Ubuntu are you using and when did you last update it? There were, a while ago, problems with some updates which killed X windows.

Can you get into a CLI and then run apt-get dist-upgrade?

Hi,

I'm running dapper with the latest upgrades since this past Thursday. I believe my card is nvidea (how do I check the exact specs?). I'm dual booting with xp (for about 3 months now w/no problems) and xp is fine.

I really appreciate you guys helping me out and pointing me in the right direction.

Cheers,

ab

try lspci in a terminal window, you'll git a good output but your video card will be listed as will all cards attached to the pci slots in you puter. or boot to windows and check device manager. do the lspci first though for the experience. also, if you boot to windows see how the screen looks and how it looks when you minimize and maximize (compare how both os's act).
