I bought a dell PC with Ubuntu 7.04 installed and I'm sad to say, I'm not impressed. They threw in a driver CD but there are NO linux drivers (only Windows EXE packages) and so I went and downloaded the Linux driver since 1024x768 resolution on a 19" widescreen is pathetic. So anyways, I'm trying to install the drivers, after about 1.5 hours, I finally figured out how to kill the X server so the driver package would let me install... Now about 1 hour later, it's telling me:
Quote:
ERROR: You do not appear to have libc header files installed on your system. Please install your distribution's libc development package.
Run Synaptic, install package "nvidia-glx" and you will have all you need. You may wish to run "nvidia-setttings" on the command line which will bring a GUI setup.

Ok, but when I ran "nvidia-settings", I got a few errors in the terminal before the GUI window opened and the GUI window was absolutely no help what-so-ever.
Using Automatix is both dangerous and unbalanced. The official community doesnt support it. Ubuntu itself , and Canonical the company that runs ubuntu, wont support it either. For issues reguarding why this is the case, run over to this link -- http://mjg59.livejournal.com/77440.html.
In 7.04 Restricted drivers manager should work out of the box, however in concession with ramesgh87 if you want more up to date drivers try envy.
If I remember correctly, Ubuntu has a Add/Remove Applications option under the Applicaitons menu, and you can use that to search for nvidia. Just make sure you have changed the settings to allow restricted drivers so that they show up in the search. If you find it in the search, Ubuntu will do the installation work for you with no console required.
