need to setup file server for use with XP, use desktop or server?
Hi all. New here, and to Linux in general, so please be patient.
I want to replace an XP Pro installation that I was using as a file server, with Ubuntu 6.10. I have both Desktop and Server burnt to CD. I believe I need to use Samba server...? The system will probably not have 'net access, the IP will blocked to external access at the router.
My main question is this:
Is there any difference between Server and Desktop, apart from the fact that Desktop has a GUI? Can Desktop do everything that server can do? I have not played with command line systems before, and don't have a lot of time to get it right at the moment, so I'd prefer to have a GUI to use if possible.
Server will probably have the gui is my guess, but whereas the desktop probably has an mp3 player, I doubt the server does, and I guess the desktop won't have apache which the server will.

Go the server
Hi, another Aussie
I have installed the server edition and tried to install a Gnome GUI, I get the GUI login, but nothing from there... Any idea how to get the Gnome to work as the GUI does on Desktop?
The only difference between the server and desktop install is the desktop install has a GUI. The desktop install can do everything a server install can.
You can install the server version and turn it in to a desktop version by installing "ubuntu-desktop" (for Gnome), "kubuntu-desktop" (for KDE) or "xubuntu-desktop" (for xfce)
