I can't seem to find my install disk for 5.04 and I can't find any place to download 5.04, they only have 5.10.
Can anyone help me either find 5.04 or inform me if there is a way to uninstall it without an installation CD?
To uninstall it, just delete the partition(s) it resides on. Or if you're installing a new operating system, just put in the disk and tell it to overwrite existing parititions. If you're using windows, you'll need to fix the master boot record to restore the windows boot loader. Just boot with your CD or make a floppy (there's a bunch online). Then type fdisk /mbr. If you have problems, just google "fix mbr windows xp".
Yes and no. If you delete the linux partition on the second drive, grub (or Lilo) will still be in your MBR (at least I assume that's what you're using to boot with). Now you could copy the boot partition (or leave it if it's separate) and then still use grub to boot windows. But if you want the windows boot loader back, you'll have to use your CD or floppy.
Google for "ultimate boot CD". I think there's a dos environment that will let you fix your MBR.
What if I want to instal mandriva over ubuntu? Is that exactly what I do? Just install it over Ubuntu? Because I am planning on using either mandriva or suse.
I would just put the CD in the drive and install it over Ubuntu. When it asks to install grub/lilo to the MBR, say yes and it should overwrite the Ubuntu bootloader and fix all the entries so you can still boot Windows.
Supposedly, it is master already (ubuntu) because every time I turn on the computer and it prompts me to choose the OS, Ubuntu is always the highlighted, the one timed, and the one with most options.
Actually, all that means is that Grub has Ubuntu as the default load. I think if you do fdisk -l (that's L, not one), you should see a list of partitions with filetypes. Whichever partition says NTFS is your windows XP partition. It probably will be /dev/hda which is the primary master. /dev/hdb is the primary slave, etc. If you're using SATA drives, I think it uses sda & sdb...
I just installed a bare bones Ubuntu 5.10 and haven't had much time to dink around with it. It's an old Celeron 400MHz at home and doesn't run too quickly on the default kernel... I recompiled a faster kernel on my main distro (Debian Sarge) and I like it a lot. Since Ubuntu is based off of Debian, I'd imagine that I would like it just fine.
If you want to check it out before you wipe the drive, just edit /etc/apt/sources.list and change every instance of "hoary" to "breezy". Then you type sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. This should update all of your packages to the new stable release, 5.10...
