I have downloaded Ubuntu several, at least 7, times and every time, the md5sum is wrong. I have tried versions 11.10 and 10.04.3. I have tried the desktop and the alternate install iso's. I have tried three different mirrors.

I am using Debian. I have checked my ram with memtest86. I have used a browser, and DownthemAll.

I have tried the Bit torrent, it just stalls. I have one running now, very slowly.

To check the md5sums I use k3b. I have also used the command line md5sum.

While typing this I have downloaded Kubuntu, kubuntu-10.04.3-desktop-i386.iso, and the md5sum was good. First try.

Is there a problem with the md5sums on Ubuntu? I did burn 2 cds, even with the bad md5sum. Not surprising, they both errored out while installing.

Any suggestions? I am installing Kubuntu as I write this, but would still like a good copy of Ubuntu.

If you get checksum errors when downloading different files from different mirrors there is either a problem with your network connection or something wrong with your hardware. It may be a faulty harddisk.

Faulty hardware sounds like a good theory; bit torrent stalling could be from the same cause. I'm less convinced about network problems, assuming the download was over TCP (as opposed to UDP) because the protocol checksums packets as they arrive; if bit torrent ever delivers and the MD5 sum is wrong, it would suggest a local hardware problem because it checks the integrity of the download.

Can you download on another system?

A backup would be prudent.

Hardware: Then why would I be able to download several other isos with no problems at all?

I wondered about my Internet connection. My provider is a pain. I downloaded a movie once and they actually phoned me about copyright infringement.

As I was installing Kubuntu I checked one of the Ubuntu isos I downloaded late yesterday. The md5sum did match. I have no clue as to why all the others failed.
