Here is what worked in the past:

Code:
xhost +SI:localuser:lightdm
sudo su lightdm -s /bin/bash
dconf-editor

navigate to

com/canonical/unity-greeter

set draw-grid to false
This should remove it from the login screen.

As yourself:
Code:
dconf-editor

navigate to

com/canonical/unity-greeter

set draw-grid to false
This should remove it from the lockscreen.

CLI version:

Code:
sudo su lightdm
gsettings set com.canonical.unity-greeter draw-grid false
Code:
gsettings set com.canonical.unity-greeter draw-grid false
