I've been having problems on one of my machines (Pentium III, 500 MHZ, 256 Meg Ram) with the machine freezing up after it sits idle for a while (usually more than 15-20 minutes). I have a screen saver enabled. This only began after upgrading the machine from Breezy to Dapper. I have installed all the updates, etc. Has anyone else experienced this? It worked fine in Breezy.
Is it the xscreensaver that you're using? I have a fully updated Dapper installation but I'm not experiencing this problem when the screensaver comes on and the machine sits unused for a long while... Have you looked at the Ubuntu.com forums to see if somebody else reports this problem?
No I have not looked at the Ubuntu forums yet. I have not had time to investigate the problem yet. I just wanted to see if anyone else had run across it yet. I am going to start by changing the screen saver. Thanks.
What do you mean by "freezing"? - Not reacting to keyboard and mouse inputs? - Additionally, the hard disk refraining from making sounds?
- That's what I've been used to have here (on two machines, an older laptop and an older PC). - It occurs when there's high CPU load, and when the temperature is high.
The next two things I'll check is, using heat-conductive paste, and using a power supply unit providing a higher voltage.
Not absolutely sure if this would help, but this is what I think from some experience and thoughts.
Newer machine support APCI for power control. Perhaps you should be running without APCI. A miss match of power control hardware and software can even cause crashes.
I turned off APCI and no change. I've also tried changing the screen saver. I don't have this problem on a laptop only an older desktop. The only thing different is that on the machine with the problem, I had upgraded to Dapper from Breezy. On my laptop, I did a fresh install. Have not found anything either in the Ubuntu forums. I'll keep working on it as I have time. I may have to do a fresh install if all else fails.
You could just disable the screen savor. It serves little purpose on a color monitor. Older B&W monitors could burnout the phosphors on the CRTs leaving a C:> burnt on the screen. Thus the name screensaver. Color CRTs don't burn out that way so it only serves to hide what you were working on or just a visually pleasing image. Fish tank scenes with swimming fish and sound of bubbling water were much the rage.
