Seems to work OKish with Wine nowadays. But I'd like to ask a new question, and maybe this is the wrong thread for it.
Itunes does seem to be fine, but I can't get it to see my external harddrive which I save my vids and music to. Any ideas I could try, or should I be looking for a different thread?
Hey all, thanks for the replies. I'm just finishing the install now and will probably mess with it more tomorrow night (not much free time). Im willing to try some alternatives to iTunes, but I'd love it if I could just give her a familiar setup. I've already trained her to use ONLY Firefox, so thats done. AIM for Linux should be fairly similar (right?). Openoffice shouldn't be too far off from word so I think she'll manage that one, so really...all Im worried about now is music and that damn iPod. I'll mess with Amarok and see how it goes. Thanks again for all the help!!!
Why would you use AIM for Linux, which is one of the crappiest Linux programs there is? Use Pidgin or Kopete and configure it w/ AIM.
First day new to Ubuntu & yes...I have an iPod. In looking at the Synaptic Package Manager there are many Amarok installations available I hate having more than I need/use on my computer & so would simply like to install the package(s) I need to play music & sync my iPod. Can anyone tell me which one(s) I should install?
Hi!
I recommend Banshee.Install "ubuntu-restricted-extras" and tell us what version of Ubuntu you're using, because you'll maybe need to add extra repositorie/s.
Thanks for your help...I'm running Ubuntu 8.10. I did look at some web sites that said I needed to add repositories but when I tried to cut & paste the addresses I was still unable to add them. The postings were old, would that matter? Or maybe I was just plain doing it wrong.

Here is a good howto for Ubuntu repositories. You can add and remove repos with synaptic and by using the command line. All the repos are in the /etc/apt/sources.list file and you can open that file with
Code:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
from the terminal.Usually is not good to read old howtos because with Linux thing's are changing fast, but no matter how old howto is you can always find something useful there. To add medibuntu repo open synaptic, third party repos and click on the add then copy/paste
enter your password end hit enter. Then you must reload repos.Just click the button in synaptic.
It is important what version of ipod you have also. You could just open synaptic, click on the search and type ipod. Then install all the packages that are interesting for you.I guess that should do after you add medibuntu repo and after you install "ubuntu-restricted-extras" which you can also install with synaptic, just search for it.
The other option is to set up a Windows virtual machine - it's pretty easy these days, and runs with minimal load on your system. I set one up on my 1.6Ghz processor/768Mb RAM/no dedicated graphics card piece of crap using (free) VMware Server 2 and it runs slowly but doesn't bring it to a grinding halt by any means. On anything resembling an up-to-date PC it should go like the Dickens. I wrote a guide, may be of help to some folks. http://www.silverknife.co.uk/tech/20...your-ipod.html
Songbird looks nice, but it's a brutal drag on the system (more system resources than my virtual machine with iTunes, which is ridiculous) and although it feels like iTunes it doesn't do a proper iTunes automatic sync. Sorry, still not convinced, although I do feel that Songbird has more potential (and style) than any of the other contenders!
