Issue with resolution as well as slowness

Alright so upon trying to start up ubuntu at a friends house on my system something bad happened. I selected what i wanted to boot as i always do (grub). But when it did boot to the login the screen was all sorts of discolored. Almost as if i have punched the monitor. I tried to somewhat ignore it as best i could until logging in and possibly fixing it. No dice. It runs far too slow to even do anything on.

The only think i can possibly think of would be when i was messing with resolution settings since i use two monitors. I really don't think that did it though seeing as how i was able to boot in just fine after messing with them.

So i started the troublshooter and it did update with like a 178mb update which gave me a whole new version to boot from and even that one is still screwy.

Ideas?

did /etc/X11/xorg.conf change?
did the graphics driver change?
did the kernel change?
did DRI change?

We need some info about the hardware... (lspci -vv and just post the graphics adapter)
