Installing Themes in Xubuntu

Hello,

I recently found a site where I could download themes to change the look of Xubuntu, but I could find no instructions on how to go about installing the theme that I found. I downloaded this theme to my desktop, and when I try to open it, it says "An error occurred while accessing the archive." I am very new to Ubuntu, and I have no idea what to do. Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks.
~Shadow

The theme you downloaded is not an XFCE theme (the environment used in Xubuntu and the likes of Zenwalk). Its a compiz theme so you need to be running compiz in order to use that theme.

Oh, now I understand why it wouldn't work..

I found a couple themes that I would like to install, but I am unable to move them to the /usr/share/themes/ folder, which I think is what I am supposed to do, judging by a post I read on another forum..

If you are installing them just for yourself, copy them to ~/.themes (this is a hidden directory called .themes in your home directory).

How would I get to the home directory? ^^; Like I said, I'm still really new to Xubuntu. I tried clicking the "Home" folder on my desktop, but none of the hidden files are named .themes =\

Not having used Xubuntu but I am guessing it uses thunar.

Go to the View from down menu and select 'Show Hidden Files' or press Ctrl + H

Yes, it does use the Thunar File Manager.

I tried that, but it isn't one of the hidden files/folders.. Here is a screenshot of the folder I'm looking at, if that helps.

I never tried to install themes on Xubuntu, but if the above is true...

Open a terminal...

At the prompt, type gksudo thunar

You'll be prompted to enter your password.... Once access is granted, Thunar will open with Root access. Put your theme downloads in the appropriate theme folder. It will probably be easiest to put the theme files on your desktop, open Thunar with root access, then once you've found the folder you want to move them to, copy/paste or cut/paste them there

Probably a theme error of some sort. I don't generally mess with anything more than the default themes, so sorry I can't be more help..

No problem, I messed around with a text file that seemed to determine the style format in there and it worked. ^_^

Thank you very much for the help, everyone. =)
