Installation password for ubuntu 9.10

Hi I need help I have ubuntu 9,10 server edition I want to install it on my desk top but it keep asking for password and login password I even put a password at the beginning but still that will not work does it have a special password I have to use every thing is find until it ask for password what should I do.help

restart and stop grub
choose single user login.
ctrl + d
type paswd rt
enter new password
confirm
create new user
add user passwd
restart
