how to set up correctly apt-get repositories

I just re-installed Kubuntu 7.10 because I changed PC.

I just not manageing to set-up correctly the repositories from which to download software and updates.

I know that they are not correctly set up because

1) on my previous install I located immediately files for the installation of firefox and thunderbird, now I don't find them

2) During last year I was prompted for some Engine update while now I am not prompted for anything

I just tried to check every boxes I found in adept repository manager, but nothing changes!

What am I getting wrong?

click on system->administration->software sources....u can set updates and repositories there....

Connect to the internet.

Open a Terminal.

Input:
Quote:
sudo apt-get update
then
Quote:
sudo apt-get upgrade
What happens?

sudo apt-get upgrade gives messages indicating that there is nothing to install

sudo apt-get update gives a long list of errors:

1) Unless you are an expert you don't need any "Sources"

2) Gutsy is a bit old now. 7.10 = 2007 October. Jaunty 9.04 is days away from official release and you would be better with a new(er) issue. 9.04 =2009 April

You can generate repositories from http://repogen.simplylinux.ch/ but it only has Hardy, Intrepid and Jaunty

I actually tried to install 8.10, but it just don't work. There is a bug in the installer, I think, because the installation (or the run from the live CD) stalls when the system is activating the bluetotth devices. I waited 1.5 hours before giving up. I think that the problem is that I don't have any bluetooth device, but the result is that I cannot install 8.10.

But I don't see any reason why up to a week ago I had my sources set-up correctly and now I am not able to duplicate the process!

Can't anybody post a correct and working "sources.list" file for 7.10?

Ubuntu 7.10 reached end of life on 4-18-09:
http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-7.10-eol
So 7.10 is no longer supported. That is why you can no longer access the repositories.
If you are having problems with Ubuntu 8.10, then try Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (long term support, which is at least 3 years). Or try Ubuntu 9.04. The final version of 9.04 will be released tomorrow.
