How to remove launchpad from xubuntu

I have an acer aspire one netbook which I run ubuntu on. After updated to 11.04 and Unity I've found that it ran much slower so I decided to install xubuntu (with apt-get install xubuntu-desktop) However, when I load it up I still get the Unity launchpad on the left hand side, which blocks part of my screen, and I can't remove it. Does anybody know how to remove this? I did do a google and searched these forums but I couldn't find any solutions.

I think you will need to remove or purge the package ubuntu desktop or what ever they are calling it now. Check in synaptic for the package name.

A clean install of Xubuntu would be better.

A clean install of Debian testing using the xfce/lxde install disk would be better yet.
