How to add a file to /etc/inittab when not available

I am trying to set up a monitoring service for my postgresql database. We had some issues recently and a monitoring service would have alerted me before they became bigger.

I got most of the instructions done, but I am having an issue with this one. It tells me to add some code to the bottom of the /etc/inittab file:

Code:
d1:23:respawn:/usr/bin/perl -w /usr/local/bin/nagios_dispatcher.pl --daemon --config /usr/local/etc/nagios_dispatcher.conf
I can not find anywhere how to configure this to match a file in /etc/init/. I'm unclear how to move past this step and would appreciate any help that you may be able to provide.

Thanks in advance. My specs for the server are below:

Virtual Server on VMWare
Ubuntu 14.04
Postgres 9.3

Ubuntu doesn't use /etc/inittab ('man inittab;') anymore due to upstart ('man upstart;'). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ub...m_init-scripts, or see "/etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf" or use an "@boot" crontab entry (though the latter isn't the same as using any form of init). *Please post back what you'll be using and inform the documentation maintainer to adapt his HOWTO text accordingly.
