Help uninstalling madwifi

Hey there everyone, just having a small problem in Breezy 5.10 regarding my WIFI card (the DWL-AG530 from d-link).

When i first log in after a fresh install, it appears to have picked the card up as ath0, but i can't configure it. Using the network GUI causes the window to hang and cause the system to function abnormally (i am unable to issue iwconfig commands etc.)

edit - (also, configuring via the terminal window doesn't work.. i get a segmentation fault when issuing 'ifconfig ath0 up')

My real question is - because i know that ndiswrapper works great with this card, is there a way to remove madwifi from an ubuntu install completely?

Thanks a lot in advance

p.s. I dont have a current Ubuntu install, but if my question is answered (i.e. it is possible to get rid of madwifi) then i will be installing it. I have tried 2 clean reinstalls of Ubuntu and they both had the same results, so i'm not putting this error down to 'bad luck!'

You could try this on a commandline (terminal):
sudo apt-get remove madwifi-tools

That is the package name on debian, so I'm not 100% sure if it will work for Ubuntu. Also, I don't think you can uninstall packages(not even temporarily) from the Ubuntu LiveCD.

The madwifi driver is part of the linux-restricted-modules package on Ubuntu.

Which means... i can't remove it? I'm not sure of the implications of these 'linux-restricted-modules', sorry. Care to enlighten?

Thanks a lot for the tip, Sepero, but as i said i dont have an ubuntu install unfortunately - im looking for an answer along the lines of 'this will DEFINITELY work' :P

If the thing that is holding you back is because you will have to erase your MSWindows install, then don't do it. Personally, I dual-booted for about a year before I could feel comfortable erasing it.

Get a second harddrive and test a few different distros out. It'll do you better in the long run.

Well no, ive got a totally seperate PC with Fedora Core 4 on it at the moment, but i like Ubuntu's style better. Uninstalling FC4 wouldnt bother me in the slightest, but it'd be comforting to get some 99% sure answers before i go to the trouble! (Hey the install takes a looong time!)

Cheers
