Hard Drive working for a long time while system is idle

My hard drive all of a sudden starts to read and write all on its own for around 15 seconds at a time while at idle or while I am just browsing the net.

At first I thought it was from cron running but I have that disabled.

Any idea what could be causing this?

Xubuntu and xfce

Nothing interesting in the system logs during this period? Have you tried using lsof to list files being accessed while the drive is running?

When I do lsof, a whole bunch of items show up and I am not sure what they are. This is without the hard drive clacking away. I checked the syslog and I found these lines:

cpu0: core temp/speed normal
cpu0: cpu core temp above threshhold cpu clock throttled

They go on about 20 times.
