Folder Permissions in Ubuntu Server

Hi Guys,

I'm a newbie to Linux. I pretty much only deal with PC's, but lately I have taken on a client who has an Ubuntu Server as there file server.

There are about 15 users in the office, all on PC's that map to a shared folder, they all use the same username and password for the mapped drive. Recently, one of the users asked me to lock down certain folders within the shared folder as they didnt want everyone seeing some sensitive information.

SO......

I created a second user called "admin" and chmoded the specified folders, remapped the specific "admin" users to the shared folder and it worked perfectly. Now only "admin" users can access certain folders.

The problem I have is, when an "admin" user creates a folder or file within a non locked out folder, standard users cannot modity the folder or file.

Can you give me any advice on how to fix this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

use groups

You can create a group, add both admin users and regular users to that group then chown admin:admin <admin only directory> then run chown admin:<shared group> <shared directories> then you can also run chmod 700 on the admin directories and chmod 777 on the shared directories. Also make the shared group the main group of the admin user by running usermod -G <shared group> <admin user name> this will make all the files created by the admin user have that group ownership , play around with it too and test it, you can also check user settings by running cat /etc/passwd and check group settings by running cat /etc/group , good luck!
