Error says "seems greeter application is crashing." Gives only one option, click OK to trying another greeter panel. Then it loads. I'm not sure I'm in the same profile I set up during install.
The main problem once I'm in is that Terminal accepts sudo pppoeconf to set up internet. Then it asks for a password but will accept no entries. Can't make a mark at the cursor. I start over in Terminal and the same result. I restart sys. Same.
So I find there is apparently no repair mode here that I can discover with search. Perhaps there is something by another name like repair install or console manager, but I can't find it.
So now I try reinstall and find the percent slider in partition is based on new hd partitioning sizes, meaning how can I keep near the same size partitions with a reinstall?
Sorry, just thought of something I didn't try. In manual partition perhaps I could just leave it alone, use no size adjustment and reinstall that way. Will that keep old partition settings? Am I on the right track? Or is there another way to repair terminal without reinstalling with the same disk which will likely give me the same error again?
Being a newbie at the age of 68 is hell! Can you help an old man. I promise not to die before I get an answer. This is why women love their children, they have suffered so much they value the child the more. I want this Linux so bad I can taste it.

Hi,
I have the exact same error with the greeter panel crashing, and I've tried allsorts so far to fix it, including removing X and reinstalling, dpkg-reconfigure and nothing has worked. I have an open thread in this forum on that very subject, but it appears that not many people have come across it.
You could try what was suggested to me - at the terminal, type:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg
As apparently there is a problem with the update with X.
Also, when entering passwords in the terminal, it will never leave a mark at the cursor, as that way people possibly glancing over your shoulder won't even know how long your password is. A little frustrating, but certainly worth the incovenience for the extra security.
And don't be put off just because you're 68 - I was newbie at 21 and I more often than not hit my head against brick walls!
Keep it up! It so happy to hear that there is no age limit on people wishing to learn new things!
Thanks for a kind reply morrolan,
I did finally do a reinstall and the greeter panel prob went off somewhere. And someone else clued me in about the situation with no visual entering date for password. An odd thing, I think but it made me laugh hilariously when I was told. WYSINotWYG.
Otherwise I'm having a good time though I've been to hell and back again on some issues with this linux install. Yet, it helped me repair some problems with winxp. And it has also given this old man, who happens to have grandchildren older than you are, though I think they are not so polite and kind as you have shown yourself to be, a challenge and some satisfaction.
Right now I'm having a knock down, dragout fight with Firestarter firewall over who is going to be master of my computer. FS must be a 'she' and she doesn't know I have another girlfriend in case I can't get along with her. I might just eliminate her. The truth is my geek level is just not high enough to master this firewall set up. But what is perhaps more important, I'm learning some new things and getting my eyes opened about this tech stuff and that keeps me young and strong in mind.
Best wishes
