Dual boot -need to just load bootloader.

I dual boot Winxp with Ubuntu on separate hard disk.Reformatted first
drive so Ubuntu still intact on second drive but need to reload
the boot loader.

So just to be clear, you need to install Grub onto the first disk to boot Windows (on the same disk) and Ubuntu on a second disk?

I think what you mean is windows on first drive has been re-formatted....just go ahead and reload windows to that drive....ubuntu will not be touched unless you change the bios boot order.

once you have confirmed windows boots ok.....you have a windows bootloader in the first drive...grubspeak hd0 and you then use a live cd to re-install grub into that mbr....so it can find the balance of the intact files sitting on drive 2.

hopefully you have a live cd?
