does anyone know how to get ubuntu 16.04 to play a dvd disc?

Hi there

I have just begun to use Ubuntu 16.04. I'm impressed so far, but have encountered my first stumbling block. I can't get it to play a DVD disc. I'm aware that this is something to do with codecs and so on, and I'm also aware that there's a way to get it to play them. I have installed ubuntu restricted extras and still no joy either in VLC , xine or SM player.

Can anyone help please?

Regards
David

HI David and welcome on board. Can you share with us the error you get pls? Like does the media player find the disk and then throw an error or maybe it fails to find the disk?

Cheers

Hi there, thank you for replying. I'm not getting any messages. Just a refusal to play a disc. I have been through the procedures on this page

https://help.ubuntu.com/16.04/ubuntu...estricted.html

But so far no luck.

Did the software you installed with the instructions on that page install successfully, no errors reported? Same with the command to install:

Quote:
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

Hi there

I don't think so. I get this in the terminal:

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh: command not found.

Is there any reason it wouldn't have installed?

First, you have to enable the multiverse ubuntu repository. Then:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
and
Code:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Thanks for that, I've put both the above commands into the terminal, entered my password and still no dvd play. I'm not sure if I've enabled the multiverse ubuntu repository though... Apologies if I sound dim. I'm a new user of ubuntu!

According to the Ubuntu site below, those repositories should be enabled for 16.04 but you can check by following the instructions at the site below.

Hi folks, thanks for all your help. I now have ubuntu 16.04 playing dvds perfectly under VLC and SMplayer.

I did have restricted extras installed ok.

The extra info I needed was here: https://sites.google.com/site/easyli...ect/multimedia

Many thanks again!

David
