desktop icon driving me crazy


my external drives create "USB HD" icons on my dekstop..i want a clean looking desktop..i dont want them here...i tried to delete the icon itself..but i only see a "unmount" option...what can i do to get rid of these annoyances

If using KDE:
R-click the desktop
Configure desktop -> Behaviour -> Device Icons

In GNOME, run the gconf-editor. There is an option somewhere in the system or nautilus settings that disables drives from showing up on your desktop.

found it...it was applications > sys tools > config editor > apps > nautilous > desktop > "volumes visible - checked off" and it worked
