cant use dual screen on 13.04, wont support hdmi...??? HELP

im using ubuntu gnome 13.03 with XFCE desktop (yeah i know)
dual screen wont work, its fine with dvi to dvi, but wont do dvi to hdmi, which is what i need for my tv.
tries SEVERAL fixes...still nothing, tried all nvidia drivers, but the 319 says its installed when its not, tried many times to no avail.
tried installing AMD Catalyst...no joy again...tried display setting..not recognised, tried arandar, not recognised, tried nvidia settings, not recognised....
whatever i try, it still wont detect my tv....its a new plasma, hdmi connection only, no dvi.
gotta add, im dissapointed with the way ubuntu is going recently, this is just 1 in a list of problems i been having, which all goes to prove....just cos its new, dont make it better!
any help appreciated.
i cant believe ive gotta go back to an unsupported 10.04, the last one to work fine with dual screen.

Hi

Yeah you know what? XFCE is one of the greatest desktops - I'm currently not using it but I like its approach .

In any case, anybody reading this post won't understand which GPU you're using.

1) Which GPU do you have? nVidia or AMD?
2) Which modulex are you using or are not willing to use? The open-source ones or the proprietary ones?
3) Which utility and/or config files are you using to configure the GPU?

(btw., I'm a pure xorg-conf-intel-or-nvidia-user, so I might not be able to help you if you're using some utility and/or amd...)

Cheers
