Can't log in, "User's $HOME/.dmrc file is being ignored...."

I have installed Ubuntu 6.06 about 1 month ago. I have been following the linux reality podcast. ... following episode 26.. Trying to network with Windows. I then tried to share the home/"user"/desktop folder . And it did become browseable on my widows network. There was no obvious problem at the time, until I tried to log back in - clearly I have done something rather wrong.
The error message occurs after entering the password and reads:
"User's $HOME/.dmrc file is being ignored. This prevents the default session and language from being saved. File should be owned by user and have 644 permissions. Users $HoME/.drmc file must be owned by user and not writable to others"
I am able to log in in the "failsafe Terminal" option but do not know how to rectify the problem . I have been able to change the smb.conf file desktop entry back to "non writeable" using gedit. Do I need to change the permissions on the $HOME/.dmrc file Appreciate any help.

Don't know how the file got messed with, I have my whole $HOME dir shared over samba and have no problems with it. Anyway here is my .drmc

Session=default

Try setting it to those permissions and content, you can backup the file first if you wish.

I had the same error after having moved my home folder. The permissions were in place, and the .dmrc file's contents were OK.

As a solution (in my case), I re-created /home/robert/.dmrc and from that time, when logging in, /media/hde1/home/robert/.dmrc (in my actual home folder) would be used, exclusively.

I have opened the file $HOME/.dmrc
and it only reads:
[Desktop]
Session=default

I added the text exactly as per the reply above ( do I need to change the "user" to my user name ? or the date ? )
But same error occurs.
When I try to login the error message reads in "view details" (~/.xsession-error file ):

WARNING** Unable to create ~/.gnome2 directory: Permission denied
Could not create per-user gnome configuation directory 'home/george/.gnome2/':Permission denied

I can still log in using Failsafe Terminal - I noticed the first line reads
:bash /home/george/.bashrc: Permission denied

Have I got a more widespread permission problem ?

you may want to check the permissions on the directory /home/george/ (ls -ld /home/george/)
and make sure the the owner and group are set to yours.

I checked and it reads
drw-r--r-- 32 george george 4096 <date,time> /home/george

I assume that is correct

Result! I changed the permissions of the home/george folder to 755 and I can now log on, I must have changed it to 644 rather than just changing the .dmrc file

I just read your Soution to your problem. I renamed my administrator account and changed the default home dir. now i cannot log in as the home dir doesn't exist. Nevertheless, I really a newbie, and I'll apreciate if you could send the steps you did on the Failsafe Terminal.

i got the same problem but when i tiped the ls -l thing that's is what i got:

How much of a difference would it make when you use LDAP with exported home directories and receive this error message?
