Cannot Find make

Have just moved to Ubuntu from Mandriva, thought i try something new.
Tried to install some programs from source, went ok until i tried to make them and received the messege 'bash: make: command not found
' . After a bit of searching on the net, i found that Ubuntu does not first install everything that is needed to install from source. So i installed everything for the gcc and even java but still come up with the same problem. Am i missing something obvious here?

sudo apt-get install build-essential

build-essential is a Ubuntu information package for all the packages required to build programs from source.
