Unhappy Broken package manager in Ubuntu 12.04 after partial update/upgrade.

After performing updates and upgrades, that limited it to partial upgrade, the package manager broke. Tried fixes via terminal, but getting the same error.

"dpkg: error processing libgudev-1.0-0 (--configure):
libgudev-1.0-0:amd64 1:175-0ubuntu9.3 cannot be configured because libgudev-1.0-0:i386 is in a different version (1:175-0ubuntu9.4)
"

I am stuck now, and looking for an answer. I am running 64 bit version on AMD 64 bit machine. Do I need i386? This occurred today 9/10/2013, an had 137 updates shown on package manager before the breakdown. MIBad?

Thanks for the response! I tried these yesterday and no change in my error message. I also learned the optical drive was no longer recognized after booting. Figured the updates/upgrades from before broke the OS. Not the first time a download was broken.

I could still boot a live DVD, tho'. I think an OS reinstall would be shortest route.(Maybe a different distro?)

Open synaptic and locate the "broken" package. You can then either reinstall it, remove it, or totally remove it. I would try each one but think you wont get anywhere until you at least remove it.

I tried running synaptic, but the error of broken dependencies and my first error message returned. Decision time, backup files and reinstall distro (new download). Checked all updates and brought the backed up files and added programs back. I know that I didn't learn much about troubleshooting this Linux distro, but the desktop is up and running (better than before). Thanks for your inputs. It shows me how far I gotta go to obtain Senior Member status. I believe I'll call this issue resolved.
