8.04 permissions

8.04 permissions
I have had ubuntu 8.04 running Zoneminder 1.22.3 for over 2 years with a capture card and cctv cameras.
I just bought a Trendnet IP512p camera.
My zoneminder box will not connect to it. The main error I get is ,
[Restarting capture daemon for ipcam, shared memory not valid],
I have pulled my hair out wasting time with shared memory settings.
I just booted a live cd of 9.10 with Zoneminder 1.22.3 that I remastered from another system and the IP camera works fine. (It ran all night in the live environment.)

From that test I have concluded I have a permission problem in my 8.04 install that is not letting www-data ( the ZM process) access what it needs to grab the stream. From the same box I can stream the camera to firefox while using vnc to connect to it.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.
Allan

I can't help with your problem but if I were you I would get a live CD of 10.04.1 and try it there.

8.04 will reach its EOL (End Of Life) with the release of 11.04. No more Desktop support.

Remember that you can install packages on the Live CD. They load to your ram and are there and working until you reboot. I mention this as I do not know if you will need to install drivers.

10.04.2 is due out in January (27th) so it should have a lot, hopefully, more bugs fixed by then. 10.04.1 had a lot of improvement over the first release.

The link for the daily live build of 10.04 current is from Aug 16th. They will start new builds about a week before the 10.04.2 release so that ISO testing can take place. The current daily is the same as the official 10.04 Cd and I have the link for it so that you can keep track of it if you want to wait for 10.04.2;

I would love to run the latest Ubuntu with Zoneminder. The problem I face is the latest version of Zoneminder does not work as well as the older 1.23.3 version, and I can not get the older version of ZM to install on the newer Ubuntu. Errors in dependencies and when I try to manually add them I get (no install candidate errors) .
I don't have time to become a Ubuntu expert. So I left well enough alone and run on 8.04 and or 8.10 weather they are updated or not. Until someone posts a step by step install guide for the older 1.23.3 version or An updated version of ZM works better than the current 1.24.xx versions, with those silly DVR buttons.
Thanks for the reply

@Alan87i: If it works don't fix it. I applaud your decision. You will be happier and your security, as provided by ZM, will remain intact. I wish more people were this pragmatic.

Sounds like what I would do.

10.04 does not run reliably on my box at all.

I have switched to Debian and am trying to get it where I want it as my main OS before 8.04 reaches its EOL. I think it will be but if it isn't I will stick with 8.04 as my secure business OS.

I recommended trying 10.04 as it does work for many, if not most folks. Frankly, I think the folks at Ubuntu have wigged out.
