In software development, an alpha release is considered to be a limited release for software testers, not a general public release. If you are interested in providing test feedback to Ubuntu, then by all means submit bug reports, which will help to improve the distro for everyone.

Alternatively, wait until 29 April for the release and write a scathing review then.

There will be beta releases of Ubuntu 10.04 in March. Look for things to stabilize a bit by then. You should expect things to break in an alpha release. That is how they get fixed.
You can follow the development of Ubuntu with benchmarking tests at http://www.phoronix.com/. For what it's worth, they have reported that 10.04 is off to a poor start:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...4_alpha1&num=1
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...d_alpha2&num=1
They attribute most of the regressions to upstream developments in the kernel and ext4 file system.

Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04 LTS) is only in its alpha stage. In March, Beta 1 will be out, and in April, Beta 2, the RC, and the final release will be out. Rant then if Lucid hasn't stabilized, as "Tommcd" has said.

Why even bother using alpha when you have the option to use Karmic or Hardy LTS.

Some people like using the bleeding edge versions in order to check out the latest kernel, apps, and features. Some people help out the development of Ubuntu by testing the development builds and filing bug reports. If neither of those apply to you, then you are better off sticking with the stable versions as you said.

BTW, Lucid 10.04 alpha 3 was just released:

Here is an article on the boot up and power performance of 10.04 at Phoronix:

Thats exactly the point I am trying to make here, using Alpha software is bound to give one issues, no sense in complaining and calling Ubuntu Lucid dysfunctional.

Yeah, and Karmic Alpha 5 was much worse, giving me endless X restarts with an ATI Radeon HD 2400 card. Lucid wasn't nearly as bad.
